Sociology Alumni and Friends
Duncan, Petterson and Schaffler were the pioneers of the sociology department, and of
many University-wide initiatives. Boyd Duncan taught at the University from 1965-1985.
He established the Human Sexuality course in 1970. Dr. Gustav Petterson was the first
teacher of Sociology at the University and taught from 1913-1957. He developed and
taught courses in sociology, economics, anthropology, corrections and also started the
College Radio Hour on KYSM Mankato. Theodore Schaffler (1902-2000) was born in the
Oklahoma Territory where he eventually served as a high school principal, superintendent
of schools and professor of Sociology. He came to Mankato as a sociology professor and
served as department chair for 20 years.
